Director of Engineering, Platform

The short version

Anguleris is a 15-year, architect-founded construction technology company and the parent of BIMsmith, Swatchbox, Modlar, Archbase, and Gaudi AI. Five brands, one platform underneath: the shared services, data infrastructure, and cloud footprint that every product stands on.

You'll own that platform and lead the team that builds it. Shared services and APIs across the brands, data infrastructure and pipelines, DevOps, cloud, and reliability. When it's healthy, five product teams ship faster than they could alone. When it's not, everything slows at once. This is the leverage job in the engineering org.

Why this role, why now

Our products are converging on a common core. Manufacturer product data flows from Archbase into BIMsmith, powers sampling through Swatchbox, and feeds Gaudi AI. That convergence is the strategy, and it lives or dies on platform quality: clean APIs, trustworthy pipelines, infrastructure that doesn't page anyone at 2 a.m. We need a director who can take an existing team and an existing platform and raise the ceiling on both.

What you'll own

The team. You're inheriting working engineers and a working platform, not a greenfield. Your first job is to learn what's actually there, earn the team's trust, and then raise the bar: on architecture, on code review, on operational discipline, on talent density. Every hire you make has to raise the average.

Shared services and APIs. The services and contracts that five brands consume. You'll set the API design standards, kill the duplication, and make the internal platform something product teams reach for instead of route around.

Data infrastructure. The pipelines that move manufacturer product data across the portfolio. Correctness and lineage matter here the way structural loads matter in a building: invisible when right, catastrophic when wrong.

Reliability and cloud. Uptime, observability, incident response, cost discipline, and the DevOps practices that let a small team run a big footprint. Boring infrastructure is the goal. Boring is a compliment here.

The roadmap tension. Five brands will each want their thing first. You'll balance product asks against platform health, say no with a reason, and keep enough slack in the system to pay down debt before it charges interest.

Who does well here

You've led engineering teams building distributed systems, and you have deep hands-on history with Postgres, API design, and cloud infrastructure. You've been a strong engineer yourself, recently enough that the team can't snow you. The pattern:

• You're humble, hungry, and people-smart. All three, no exceptions. You inherit a team by listening first, you don't need to be pushed, and you know which engineer is quietly carrying the platform and which one is quietly drowning.
• You have taste in systems. You know the difference between simple and simplistic, and your architectures get easier to reason about over time, not harder.
• You close loops. Incidents get postmortems, postmortems get action items, action items get done. We hate dropped balls more than we hate outages.
• You're calm in an incident and honest after it. Blameless doesn't mean accountability-free, and you can hold both.
• You have agency. Ambiguous ownership, missing runbook, unclear priority? "I'll figure it out," and then you do.
• You push brooms. No ticket is beneath you. You'll fix the flaky CI job yourself on a Friday if that's what the team needs.

What this role is not

• It is not a pure people-management perch. You'll be in the architecture, in the reviews, and occasionally in the code. If you've fully left the technical work behind, this will frustrate you.
• It is not a rip-and-replace mandate. The platform works and the team built it. Respect what's there, then improve it deliberately.
• It is not an empire-building role. The platform exists to make five product teams faster. Their velocity is your scoreboard.

Practical details

• Full-time, onsite at our Elgin, IL headquarters.
• You'll work closely with product engineering across all five brands and with our AI/ML leadership, whose model infrastructure sits alongside, not under, this role.
• Compensation: competitive salary plus performance bonus, commensurate with experience.
